  1. For a company that deals with natural gas pipelines, off-shore drilling and holdings in the oil sands, winning an award for ethics is significant. Their ethical policies extend from fraud prevention to environmental policies. The company even has an integrity hotline so that the public can voice their concerns about conduct. Written, published policies and public input are all good examples of what a company should have. On the other hand EnCana has been in the negative spotlight recently over fracking. EnCana has been sued over water contamination because of fracking operations and has publicly retaliated over these charges. This goes to show that even companies with excellent ethics policies need to be constantly vigilant in their interaction with the environment. Mining companies damage the environment when they remove product. There is not way to avoid that. Companies must minimize the damage they do to the environment and be prepared to restore the environment as required. These companies must have back up plans and emergency response plans. Consumers will pay in the end for these programs, but without them in place the damage to the environment could be catastrophic. Some people might question the ethics of using products that cause so much damage to the environment both in extracting them and in their processing and final use.
